Petaluma has an awesome new vegan restaurant! If you haven't been to the new Lydia's Sunflower Center in Petaluma, you'll definitely want to stop in for some great food. Lydia's Organics has pioneered many fantastic raw and cooked foods sold in Whole Foods and other fine markets. Lydia's has also been a mainstay vendor and caterer offering her tasty organic fair at festivals, fairs and conventions all over Northern California. In Marin County, Lydia also runs Lydia's Kitchen, a wonderful little vegan Cafe in downtown Fairfax at 31 Bolinas Rd. But now you can sit down and enjoy her innovative creations up here in Sonoma County too! The food is healthy, fresh and delicious and almost everything on the menu is organic! Lydia's Sunflower Center is just east of the freeway at the Petaluma Blvd North exit.

Directions:

Get off at Petaluma Blvd North, go east and turn left on North McDowell Blvd. Then look for the sign for Lydia's Sunflower Center at 1435 on the left. The sign is on the ground and it isn't very big so drive slowly to see it.

Catering to the Vegan, Vegetarian, Organic and Locavore community, GG’s Earth and Surf offers a 99 percent organic menu with 90 percent of the ingredients grown and harvested within 150 miles of Santa Rosa.  As the name suggests, they have food from the earth: vegetarian and vegan faire and from the surf: sustainability harvested fish is the only meat on the menu. The vegan mushroom stroganoff is rich and delicious. However, the entrees are small, so take advantage of the vegan minestrone soup with arugula pesto and sides dishes like roasted brussels sprouts and new potatoes.

Chinese food is always a great choice for a vegan option, but this is not your ordinary Chinese. Fresh China borrows from different Asian traditions for unusual dishes and flavors, and the owner, Peter, is a culinary genius. Fresh China not only has an extensive vegetarian menu, including vegan pot stickers, dumplings and spring rolls, they also offer organic seasonal vegetables in some dishes. The menu assures us that they use no MSG or food coloring and cook with sea salt (not table) and rice oil. You have to ask, but they do offer brown rice as well. Also, tell them you want no egg- there is egg in a few things, but they can make anything without it.

I will share with you some recommendations as my husband and I have tried almost everything on the veggie menu. We have not been disappointed yet, but here are some of the highlights. It’s hard just to get out of the appetizer menu there is so much good stuff. In fact, sometimes we order nothing but appetizers and have an excellent meal. I mentioned the pot stickers- but the dumplings are even better. The green onion pancakes are delicious, (heavy and intense, but so good!) The Mu Shu Vegetables is my favorite. I always get it. It’s messy, with the little thin tortilla (I don’t know what it is called in Chinese) falling apart and getting your fingers sticky, but it’s fun and so flavorful. The salads are very good as well.

On to the entrees. Our favorite staple is the Braised Tofu with Vegetables. They use Wildwood organic tofu, but somehow prepare it unlike anything I can duplicate at home, the texture is wonderful. If you’re an eggplant fan, an excellent choice is the Eggplant with Fresh Basil Leaves in Coconut Curry Sauce- in fact anything in the Coconut Curry Sauce- you have to try it! They will make any dish with this sauce. If your a noodle lover, the Vegetable Chow Fun with Flat Noodles is awesome (be sure to ask for it egg-free) and finally the Organic Almond Butter Noodles with Fresh Garlic and Lemon Juice. With all the dishes you can mix and match the different noodles and sauces. The flat noodles are the best, thick and hardy.

The staff is always very friendly. Bonnie and Peggy are Peter’s sisters that have come to help him with the restaurant. They are very sweet- tell them that Hope & Cogen sent you. The only complaint that we have had is that the dishes will come out of the kitchen one at a time, not all at once. We will sometimes have our entree for quite a while before our rice comes. A small price to pay for such an awesome meal.

Completely separate large Vegetarian Menu! Like physically separate, so you don't have to skim over the meat dishes to find the tiny veggie section. The Thai Coconut Lemongrass Soup should not be missed. It's spectacular. You can ask for brown rice. Large sheets of paper act as the tablecloth and they offer colored pencils so you can draw on the table! Not super ecological, but lots of fun.

East West Cafe

One in both Santa Rosa and Sebastopol. Natural International Foods. Many macrobiotic and vegan options but beware of their soups, unfortunately they use a bouillon base that is not vegetarian. We've been trying to get them to use one of the many fine vegan bouillons but no luck so far. Please gently let them know how you feel about this and maybe they will change it eventually.

Menu: Has International and Middle Eastern foods, hummus, salads, sandwiches, falafel, burrito, stir-fry and pastas. Tofu can be substitute for meat in many of the dishes. Fresh juices, smoothies, non-dairy shakes and desserts. Full service, take-out.
